NARRATIVE
Dr. Mike Whittle is a medical doctor and research scientist from Great Britain. Until he retired in 2005, he held the Walter M. Cline, Jr., Chair of Excellence in Rehabilitation Technology in the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC). He was a professor in the Department of Physical Therapy, and also in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery of the University of Tennessee College of Medicine. He obtained his first degree, in physiology, from the University of London, and his medical doctorate from St. George's Hospital, University of London. After obtaining full registration as a doctor, he decided to embark on a career in research and teaching, and obtained a Masters degree in biomechanics and a Ph.D. in human biology and health, both from the University of Surrey. As an exchange medical officer in the Royal Air Force, he was loaned to NASA to supervise six of the medical experiments on the skylab space program. He later joined the faculty of the University of Oxford, and carried out pioneer work on the scientific measurement of human walking. He moved to UTC in August 1989, teaching kinesiology, scientific inquiry and gait analysis in the Physical Therapy program. He founded and directed the H. Carey Hanlin Gait Analysis Laboratory, originally in the Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation, but subsequently relocated to the UTC campus. In the laboratory, he assessed patients with walking disorders, and conducted research on human gait and related topics. He is the author of numerous scientific papers and two books, one of which is used as a text book for courses throughout the world, including the Kinesiology and Gait Analysis courses at UTC!
